'The Nightrunners of Bengal' is the one about the mutiny. I was surprised that one critic said the book was difficult to get into. The plot is there from the first pages and the characters are well drawn. Another critic said it was the mutiny from the British point of view but it does give the reasons for the mutiny; these should have been /5(52).

Nightrunners of Bengal has its immersive world as its true protagonist and its main focus is the emotional turmoil of the main character. It is a breath of fresh air to read something about a grey world, a foreigner describing their foreign home and how dark it can become in war/5.

"Nightrunners of Bengal" is an exciting and masterfully written gathering of lies and half-truths written from an obvious pro-colonialist viewpoint. It is also a classic of Nightrunners of Bengal book genre. A telling example of the author's bias is that Indians refer to the, so called, Mutiny of (the central event of the novel) as the First War of Independence/5.

Nightrunners of Bengal is the title of the first novel by John Masters. It was published in the United States in Januaryand at first attracted severe criticism from some reviewers who objected to what they regarded as its imperialist viewpoint and graphic depiction of acts of savagery.

This was the first novel that Masters wrote in the series, though not the first novel chronologically, and alongside Bhowani Junction is one of his best-known of the great novels of India, Nightrunners of Bengal combines John Master's mastery of story-telling with an intuitive sense of Captain Rodney Savage of the 13th /5(4).
